Pushkar

Pushkar

Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation. Hence the only Brahma temple in India is situated in Pushkar and is one the major attractions here. Unfortunately, like most temples you can't take photos of the interior. To that, I decided not to go to the only Brahma temple in India.

According to Hindu theology, the pond at the Katas Raj temple Near choa saidan shah in Chakwal District of Pakistan has a theological association with Lord Shiva; it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife, Sati. The story goes that when Sati died, Lord Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds – one at Pushkara in Ajmer in India and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means raining eyes, in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Katas is derived. It is often called "Tirth Raj" – the king of pilgrimage sites – and has in recent years become a popular destination for foreign tourists.1

We arrived to Pushkar via bus to Ajmer. From there a private vehicle drove us to our hotel. A nice place on the outer edges of Pushkar. Our Tour Leader also informed us that there was a swimming pool. In January. Hardy har har. The pool was empty.

You can walk from almost any where in Pushkar to the lake area. Be informed that if you are 30 feet from the lake edge, you must take off your shoes, as it is a holy site. Like many places, we were accausted by the people trying to sell us things, and the occaisional annoying chapti lady, or their children. The other touts are either holy people trying to get you to go with them to perform a hindu ritual, or non-holy people pretending to be holy people tyring to sell you the same thing. You have been warned. Two of our travel mates took part in the ceremony and enjoyed themselves.

In most cases people are fairly friendly in Pushkar, but a once around Pushkar for day, I feel is enough. However, Dylan would think otherwise.
